Diving, diving, diving – that’s how we could summarize the reasons for all tourists travelling to the Sipadan islands, west of the great island of Borneo, Malaysia.
The dive sites around Sipadan have an excellent reputation for visibility and underwater life and it’s known as an exclusive place for diving lovers. With more than 3,000 species of fish and hundreds of coral species in its rich ecosystem, Sipadan Island is world famous for the sumptuousness of underwater life around it.
On a single dive in Sipadan, it is almost guaranteed to find turtles roaming the coral reefs and, with any luck, watch their mating. Sharks, crocodile fish, lion and parrot, water snakes and an endless of other creatures of all shapes and sizes are an assiduous presence in the waters around the island reef.
Giant blankets fluttering in the ocean, barracuda schools and rarer species such as hammerhead sharks are also occasionally sighted in the vicinity.
Sipadan is part of a marine protected conservation area and only 120 people are allowed in per day. If you want to dive here, arrange your permission in advance.
